Confusion about medical decision-making can slow down the coding process, cause practices to lose money, and increase the likelihood of a failed E/M claims audit. If CMS goes through with a plan to let clinicians use medical decision-making to select the level of their E/M visit, practices who aren’t clear on this concept now could be dead in the water come January 1.

During this 75-minute webcast, expert speaker Maxine Lewis, CMM, CPC, CCS-P, will discuss why medical decision-making is crucial to coding E/M services. Medical decision-making is a key element of E/M coding, but coders struggle to understand the information required to select the appropriate level of decision-making. In addition, coders need to train clinicians to properly document their work to support their claims. Participants will have the ability to submit questions before and during the webcast and have them answered at the end during an educational Q&A session.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand why medical decision-making is crucial to coding E/M service
  • Avoid the common medical decision-making mistakes that cost practices money
  • Use best practices for accurately counting diagnoses, management options, information reviewed, and risk
  • Train clinicians to improve their documentation to support their medical decision-making

Agenda

  • The role of medical decision-making in coding E/M visits
  • The three building blocks of complexity
  • The information that does—and does not—get counted when determining the level of medical decision-making
  • Documentation necessary to support medical decision-making
  • Live Q&A
