Understand the core coding competencies that dictate accurate coding. Start with the coding fundamentals, guidelines, and conventions, and then dive into how to properly code the most common home health diagnoses.

Our expert speaker includes opportunities to pause the recording to work through scenarios, which she discusses in depth to ensure retention and comprehension.

The training covers:

  • What is ICD-10-CM, including what governs how we code and who establishes diagnoses
  • The importance of face-to-face documentation in assigning accurate principal diagnoses
  • A deep dive into the ICD-10 official coding guidelines and conventions, including the use of laterality, Excludes notes, sequelae, 7th character assignment, and key sequencing guidelines.
  • How to Use the Alphabetic Index, Tabular List, and Neoplasm Table to correctly find codes
  • An overview of PDGM and its impact on coding
  • How to navigate the legal and ethical standards of care and clinician collaboration.
  • Key chapter-specific guidelines in the following Tabular chapters, including instruction on how to find and assign the code, key sequencing guidelines to be aware of, what to avoid/be cautious of:
    • Chapt 1: HIV, sepsis/septic shock, MRSA
    • Chapt 2: Neoplasms, metastasis, complications of neoplasms
    • Chapt 3: Anemia
    • Chapt 4: Diabetes, diabetic manifestations
    • Chapt 5: Substance use, abuse, withdrawal; Dementia
    • Chapt 6: Hemiplegia, Pain, Parkinson’s disease
    • Chapt 7: Glaucoma, blindness, low vision
    • Chapt 9: Hypertension, Hypertensive diseases (and assumed relationships), heart failure, CAD, AMIs, CVA
    • Chapt 10: COPD, asthma, emphysema

    • Chapt 13: Site and laterality, bone vs joint, pathological fractures, osteoporosis

Nanette MintonNanette Minton, RN, HCS-D, HCS-H, HCS-O, Senior Clinical Coding Manager, MAC Legacy

Serving in a leadership capacity for over 20 years, Nanette has held a variety of roles in the home care and hospice industry including clinical, administrative, consulting, education, and agency startup & development. She currently holds the position of Senior Clinical Coding Manager for MAC Legacy. Nanette provides day to day coding and quality support to the home care and hospice agencies receiving coding services. She also serves as a consultant for quality and regulatory issues that arise due to the complex and integrated nature of coding. Nanette's experience in the industry gives her a unique perspective and allows her to provide coding and audit knowledge firsthand to clients.
